LACK OF SEX EDUCATION IN MALAYSIA
According to UNESCO (2010) “ Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) is a curriculum-based process of teaching and learning about the cognitive, emotional, physical, and social aspects of sexuality. It aims to equip children and young people with knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values that will empower them to: realize their health, well-being, and dignity; develop respectful social and sexual relationships; consider how their choices affect their own well-being and that of others; and understand and ensure the protection of their rights throughout their lives.” In correspondence to that, understanding on sex education is still alarmingly low among adolescents, defined by WHO as any person between the ages of 10 - 19, in Malaysia.
In Malaysian culture, talking about sex is frowned upon since it can tempt young people to try it for themselves. Adolescents are really constantly exposed to sexual content through pornographic websites and their classmates, which causes a number of grave misconceptions regarding sexual and reproductive health (SRH). In this paper we will explore further into the reason behind the lack of sex education among Malaysian adolescents.
